Because it is very unreactive or inert, Helium (He) is used to provide an inert protective atmosphere for making fiber optics and semiconductors, and for arc welding.

Helium is also used to detect leaks as those present in car air-conditioning systems. Seeing that it is inert and lighter than air, it is widely used to inflate balloons.
